Introduction

73.1 Chapters 71 and 72 considered the Telecommunications Act 1997 (Cth) and how it interacts with the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). This chapter examines a number of other privacy-related telecommunications issues. The first section of the chapter examines access to, and interception of, information under the Telecommunications (Interception and Access) Act 1979 (Cth). The next section looks at the regulation of spam and telemarketing under the Spam Act 2003 (Cth) and the Do Not Call Register Act 2006 (Cth).[1] The final section considers cooperation between the various bodies with responsibility for privacy in the telecommunications industry.

[1] Direct marketing is discussed more generally in Ch 26.
