Introduction

47.1 This chapter examines the functions vested in the Privacy Commissioner (Commissioner). These functions include powers to oversee the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth) and to monitor compliance with the Act.[1] The chapter also discusses and makes recommendations aimed at clarifying the Commissioner’s oversight powers and enhancing the use of privacy impact assessments (PIAs), audits and public interest determinations (PIDs) under the Act.
