The Hon Justice Mordecai Bromberg
Justice Bromberg is the President of the ALRC and was appointed on 10 July 2023 for a term of five years.
Justice Bromberg was appointed a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia in 2009 after a long career as a barrister at the Victorian Bar and a shorter career as a solicitor working in Melbourne, London and Hong Kong. He was also an occasional consultant to the International Labour Organisation.
Some 14 years and over 500 judgments after his Honour’s appointment to the Federal Court, he was appointed President of the Australian Law Reform Commission in July 2023 but continues as a part-time Judge of the Federal Court. Justice Bromberg presided over many of the most important cases in the areas of law in which he practiced. His Honour led the Federal Court’s Employment and Industrial Relations National Practice Area, and his Honour’s wide-ranging practice and experience included Administrative Law, Native Title Law, Migration Law, Human Rights and Constitutional Law.
To date, Justice Bromberg has led the following ALRC inquiries:
- Review of the Legislative Framework for Corporations and Financial Services Regulation
- Review into Exemptions for Religious Educational Institutions in Federal Anti-Discrimination Law
Justice Bromberg is the Chair of the Advisory Board of the Centre for Employment and Labour Relations Law, University of Melbourne, is a former President of the International Commission of Jurists (Victoria) and the former founding President of theAustralian Institute of Employment Rights.
