Today I am attending an event in Sydney to celebrate the 40th Anniversary of the Australian Law Reform Commission (ALRC) and I extend my best wishes to the Commission on this occasion.

Since its foundation in 1975, the Commission has played an important role in independently researching, consulting on and evaluating Australia’s laws and legal frameworks.

Throughout the past 40 years, successive Governments have been the beneficiaries of the deep analysis and wide consultation undertaken by the Commission before making its recommendations to government across areas as diverse as evidence, criminal sentencing laws, family violence and multiculturalism in the law.

The ALRC’s current review of Commonwealth Laws for Consistency with Traditional Rights, Freedoms and Privileges will add to that body of work and provide a strong base to
investigate further law reform.
