Review of the Archives Act 1983 (IP 19)

An Issues Paper was released in 1996, titled Review of the Archives Act 1983 (IP 19).

The paper is divided into two parts. Part 1 outlines briefly the history of record keeping and of the development of archival institutions and legislation in Australia and other countries. It also raises issues as to the scope and objectives of archives legislation and the administrative and technological environment in which the legislation might be anticipated to operate.

Part 2 suggests a series of principles on which an effective record keeping and archival system might be based. It then tests the current provisions and operation of the Act against the suggested principles and considers options for addressing any gaps or weaknesses identified. Information in the paper is correct to 30 November 1996.
