The Honourable Michelle May AM QC was appointed as a part-time ALRC Commissioner in December 2018, to assist in the Review of the Family Law System.

Her Honour was appointed a judge of the Family Court of Australia in September 1995 and in February 2003 was assigned to the Appeal Division of the Family Court.  In July 2017 Her Honour retired as a judge of the Family Court of Australia having served as the Senior Judge of the Appeal Division. 

From 2013 to 2015 Her Honour was President of the Australian Institute of Judicial Administration.

Prior to her appointment to the court, Michelle was appointed Queen's Counsel in 1993. She has been involved in government and professional organisations relating to family law at state, national and international levels including the Bar Association, the Family Law Council and the International Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers.

On 12 June 2017, she was appointed a member in the General Division in the Order of Australia. 

Since retiring as a judge, Michelle has attended further courses in mediation and arbitration and is now an accredited mediator and arbitrator.
