Geoffrey Sinclair was appointed as a part-time ALRC Commissioner in October 2017, to assist in the Reivew of the Family Law System.

Mr Sinclair is Chair of the Board of the World Congress of Family Law and Children’s Rights, which is  dedicated to enhancing, promoting and protecting the rights of children and young people around the globe. He is also immediate Past Chair of the Family Law Section of the Law Council of Australia and a former Director of the Australian Institute of Family Law Arbitrators and Mediators (AIFLAM), as well as a Fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers.

He formerly served as a Secretary and Executive Member of the Family Law Practitioners Association (FLPA) of Queensland and is a former member of the Queensland Child Support Agency Liaison Group.

Mr Sinclair is a practising principal at Barry.Nilsson and has specialised in family law matters for the past thirty years. He is an accredited Family Law Specialist and Mediator.

He is listed as a Preeminent Family Law & Divorce Lawyer in the 2014-2017 editions of Doyle’s Guide, and in Best Lawyers 2017 for his expertise in Family Law Mediation.

In his work, Mr Sinclair has a particular interest in child abduction laws, including its international aspects, and has published widely on this topic. He has developed a reputation, both in Australia and overseas as an expert in this area. Mr Sinclair is also well regarded for his expertise in the commercial aspects of family law, particularly complex issues relating to trusts, property and tax.

His broad experience and expertise in family law are reflected in his contributions to CCH Australian Family Law and Practice (Essentials). Over the years he has published many articles on both family law and international child abduction matters.
