Open Government - A Review of the Federal Freedom of Information Act 1982 (ALRC 77)

The Australian Law Reform Commission began this joint reference with the Administrative Review Council in July 1994. An Issues Paper (IP 12) was released in September 1994, followed by a discussion paper (DP 59) in June 1995. The review concluded in January 1996 with the tabling of ALRC 77 in federal parliament.

This report is still under consideration by the federal government.

On 24 September 2007, the ALRC received Terms of Reference from the Attorney-General of Australia to inquire into FOI laws and practices across Australia. Click here for further information.

On 22 July 2008, the Attorney-General informed the ALRC that the FOI Inquiry was being suspended as part of the FOI reform process announced by the Federal Government.
