Product Liability (ALRC 51)
On 11 September 1987, the federal Attorney-General directed the Australian Law Reform Commission to consider the issue of product liability. The Victorian Law Reform Commission was given a companion reference soon afterwards and the two Commissions worked together to produce a single report, Product Liability (ALRC 51/VLRC 27).
Three consultation documents were released as part of the reference:
-
Product Liability (Issues Paper 7);
-
Product Liability (Discussion Paper 34); and
-
Product Liability: Draft Legislation (Discussion Paper 37).
The final report was tabled in federal parliament on 15 August 1989.
There has been no implementation of the recommendations of ALRC 51, with the federal government adopting an alternative option.
