Civil Admiralty Jurisdiction (ALRC 33) and
Criminal Admiralty Jurisdiction and Prize (ALRC 48)

The Australian Law Reform Commission was asked in November 1982 to report generally on all aspects of the admiralty jurisdiction in Australia. The ALRC decided to report on this reference in two parts. The first, civil admiralty jurisdiction, and the second concerning the law of prize and criminal admiralty jurisdiction.

A Discussion Paper Admiralty Jurisdiction (DP 21) and a series of research papers were released in 1984. This was followed by Civil Admiralty Jurisdiction (ALRC 33), which was tabled in December 1986. Criminal Admiralty Jurisdiction and Prize (ALRC 48) was tabled in November 1990.

There has been substantial implementation of the recommendations made by the Commission in the two reports.
